EXCLUSIVE: PRAS TEAM REVEAL

The tail-end of the FPL season often feels like that to me. It was only a few weeks ago when the Liverpool “double-double” was provisionally announced, we were planning our chip strategy and we were indulging in the uncharted Assistant Manager chip territory. The doubles and blanks came and went, and now we stand here with three Gameweeks left and no further bumps in the road.

This isn’t the time to look back, as such, but I am happy with how my season has gone. Lady Luck has been firmly on my side on a lot of crucial 50/50s but equally, I think I have made fewer bad decisions (again, a byproduct of things generally going my way on many of the picks).

I sit just under 3k rank and at a little bit of crossroads as to how I see out the season. I could, of course, play my normal style and keep making good decisions, or play a bit more aggressively to push for a triple-digit rank. That’s something I have never had in 14 years of playing FPL. This is easier said than done, of course.

Last week, I went against the popular Bryan Mbeumo (£8.2m) captaincy and despite the Omar Marmoush (£7.6m) blank, I feel I got away with one, given the mere five points Mbeumo got in Brentford’s four-goal victory.

GAMEWEEK 36 BUS TEAM

My bus team (below) looks in decent shape. I say so, speaking relatively. Not many defenders have good clean sheet odds, and the forward line has been somewhat misfiring.

Like many others, I am going to ride it out with my goalkeepers and defenders. I don’t see the upside in using one “magic bean” on a transfer such as Tino Livramento (£4.6m) to Neco Williams (£4.5m). Instead, I will dedicate the three remaining moves to attack the fixtures. These include the promoted teams plus the distracted Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur sides.

Generally speaking, the three forwards I am looking at are Yoane Wissa (£6.7m), Evanilson (£5.8m) and Ollie Watkins (£8.9m). These are all unique in the sense that none of them are on penalties, and we love our penalty-taking forwards. However, when it’s a case of three Gameweeks, the “extras” matter a bit less and it’s about targeting fixtures and entry/exit points.

Gameweek 36 Plan

The team looks fine on paper but the one I have an eye on selling is Jean-Philippe Mateta (£7.6m). The French forward’s form has been up and down since his ear injury but importantly, his minutes seem to be managed a lot more than his other attacking counterparts Ismaila Sarr (£5.7m) and Eberechi Eze (£6.9m). Moreover, his penalty miss in the cup and Eze’s successful conversion in Gameweek 35 further dents his appeal. I also worry about his minutes in the Gameweek 37 fixture, which falls only a couple of days after the FA Cup final.

If this were any other point in the season, I’d probably save the free transfer for a later use. However, this late in the season, saving feels a bit passive. The entry points this week for Wissa and Chris Wood (£7.1m) look great. Both playing promoted teams and thus have huge upside.

Looking at the below graphic from RobT/Solio Analytics, Brentford are expected to score 5.5 goals over the next three matches, a clear 0.5 more than Nottingham Forest and well above Wolves’ 4.2. Assuming similar goal shares, I think Wissa does stand out unless one wants to double down and punt on a Wood captaincy this week.

For my own team, I am looking at the Mateta to Wissa transfer or possibly waiting a week by saving an FT.

Gameweek 37 Plan

The saving route gives me the option to attack possibly the best differential captain of Gameweek 37: Ollie Watkins. It’s the Spurs fixture that appeals here. Despite it being moved a couple of days earlier, they just haven’t had any interest in the league and I don’t see that changing in Villa’s final home game where the Villians will have everything to play for.

I do have two concerns here:

(i) I want to see Watkins get more than 70 minutes in Gameweek 36
(ii) the Youri Tielemans (£5.5m) injury possible dents their overall attack

On the other hand, if I went for Wissa in Gameweek 36, then I plan to save a free transfer in Gameweek 37 and take two frees to Gameweek 38.

Gameweek 38 Plan

For the big Gameweek 38 bonanza, I have two fixtures in mind: Southampton v Arsenal and Bournemouth v Leicester City. This is where I see most goals coming. This is why I will try to take two free transfers into the final day, injuries permitting.

Tentatively, I plan on getting Bukayo Saka (£10.3m) back in for Kevin De Bruyne (£9.5m), and a Bournemouth attacker – either Justin Kluivert (£6.0m) or Evanilson – for Marmoush. With Arsenal now out of the Champions League, I am happy to wait and see Mikel Arteta’s approach. They could see out the season on a whimper, or put out a full-strength team to finish strong. As things stand, I foresee the latter.

Good luck with your final magic beans. Hopefully, we can all make them count to achieve the goals we have set ourselves between now and the end of the season.
