Gameweek 1 Team

In goal, I’ve swapped out Bart Verbruggen, who was in my early drafts, for Robert Sanchez. Chelsea have good opening fixtures and Sanchez offers a cost-effective and secure route into their defence.

At only £4m, Martin Dúbravka is an easy choice as my reserve ‘keeper. The Slovakian international is likely to be Burnley’s starting GK once he overcomes his current injury.

My two premium defenders are Pedro Porro and James Tarkowski. Spurs have great opening fixtures and Porro’s share of set pieces should increase with James Maddison unfortunately sidelined due to injury. Meanwhile, Tarkowski should rack up points for defensive contributions (defcons). However, news of an injury to Jarrad Branthwaite means I may rethink the Tarkowski pick.

My remaining defenders are Joachim Anderson, Maxime Estève and Neco Williams. The first two, like Tarkowski, should do well for defcons based on last season’s numbers. Whilst I prefer Murillo over Williams, the latter allows me to tap into the Nottingham Forest defence while saving me a precious £0.5 million.

In midfield, Bruno Fernandes, Cole Palmer and Mohamed Salah are all locks. Palmer and Salah cover captaincy well. Bruno is a gift following the introduction of defcons, even if he is likely to feature in a deeper central midfield position.

Although risky, Tijjani Reijnders is also close to being locked in my team. I don’t think he’s assured to play 90 minutes every game. He may even spend a few weeks playing in a deep-lying midfield role until Rodri returns. But, I like the potential upside he offers long term. Reijnders’ xGI/90 was ~0.3 for AC Milan last year. So, if he can replicate that for Manchester City, he’s a solid pick at only £5.5 million.

I’m currently doubled up on City midfielders. Omar Marmoush takes the final spot in my squad. However, this spot will likely go down to the wire. Florian Wirtz is also in my thinking and a cheaper option such as Ismaïla Sarr is in contention should I choose to include Ollie Watkins upfront.

Jean-Philippe Mateta is also close to being a lock in my team – Crystal Palace have good fixtures from GW2 and Mateta looks to be first-choice penalty taker if the Community Shield is anything to go by.

Marc Guiu also joins my final team selection. At only £4.5 million, he’s the key to unlocking the other premium picks and he should be first choice for Sunderland in due course, making him a good option for a later bench boost. Price drops are the only risk, particularly if he doesn’t start for a couple of weeks, as looks to be the case.

My final forward spot is currently occupied by Jørgen Strand Larsen. While I don’t think he’ll take penalties (I think Jhon Arías will get them based on their respective career records), Strand Larsen offers great value at £6.5 million. As mentioned earlier, I’ll also consider Ollie Watkins.
