Newsletter exclusive: Tom Freeman Team Reveal

The priority for my team either this week or next is a new goalkeeper, so in this piece, I will try to identify the best candidate.

I’ll also do a Gameweek 32 team reveal and discuss captaincy, so it should hopefully benefit both myself and you.

IDENTIFYING A NEW GOALKEEPER

A new ‘keeper is probably the natural choice for my free transfer this week.

The position is often overlooked in FPL, yet picking the optimal shot-stopper could be the secret to a successful Double Gameweek 34.

My current options, Alphonse Areola (£4.2m) and Martin Dubravka (£4.2m), have been poor and, like many of you, I’m sick of the sight of them.

Firstly, it makes sense to target a ‘keeper who ‘doubles’ in Gameweek 34, given the additional fixture, plus the fact I plan to Wildcard in Gameweek 35. So, the player pool is instantly reduced to seven.

  • David Raya – Arsenal (bha, AVL, wol + CHE)

  • Murara Neto – Bournemouth (lut, MUN, avl + wol)

  • Dean Henderson – Crystal Palace (MCI, liv, WHU + NEW)

  • Jordan Pickford – Everton (BUR, che, NFO + LIV)

  • Caoimhin Kelleher – Liverpool (mun, CRY, ful + eve)

  • Ivo Grbic – Sheffield United (CHE, bre, BUR + mun)

  • Jose Sa – Wolverhampton Wanderers (WHU, nfo, ARS + BOU)

When searching for a goalkeeper, there are three key routes to points: clean sheets and saves are the main ones, with additional bonus points generally coming from a combination of the two.

Obviously, it’s important to find someone who has the potential for both keeping clean sheets and making lots of saves. Ideally, they will come from a decent defensive side who concede lots of low-quality shots.

Immediately, I can remove David Raya (£5.1m) and Murara Neto (£4.7m) from my shortlist, due to already maxing out on Arsenal and Bournemouth players.

I’m also ruling out Caoimhin Kelleher (£3.9m), as I want to leave my third Liverpool spot open for one of Trent Alexander-Arnold (£8.4m), Luis Diaz (£7.6m) or Darwin Nunez (£7.6m).

Sheffield United’s defence is awful, so it essentially comes down to Dean Henderson (£4.4m), Jose Sa (£5.0m) or Jordan Pickford (£4.6m).

At team level, here are some important stats I like to look at when selecting a ‘keeper:

At this moment in time, I’m leaning towards Pickford, who ticks a lot of boxes. Everton’s Gameweek 32 opponents Burnley are slowly improving as an attacking unit, so he is far from guaranteed a clean sheet, but I would like some Toffees defensive coverage for the ‘double’ and Pickford may be the best way in.

Crucially, Pickford benefits from low-scoring encounters. If Everton keep a clean sheet, then their lack of goals is likely to favour him in the bonus, which could be a factor v Burnley and Nottingham Forest.

I also prefer Rayan Ait-Nouri (£4.7m) and Daniel Munoz (£4.5m) as defensive coverage at Wolverhampton Wanderers and Crystal Palace respectively, simply because they are so attack-orientated, further tipping the balance in Pickford’s favour.

Ait-Nouri in particular stands out. Three goals in his last four Wolves appearances is clear evidence of his attacking threat under Gary O’Neil. With a little more composure in the penalty box, he could even have scored more.

Due to injuries, Ait-Nouri has recently been operating as left-sided no 10 and even at times as a makeshift centre-forward. It won’t last forever – Hwang Hee-chan (£5.4m) and Matheus Cunha (£5.5m) should be ready to start games soon – but he will still carry assist potential and is clearly the Wolves defensive option with the most upside.

With this in mind, transferring Dubravka out for Pickford seems the logical move, leaving me with the following fixture run up until I Wildcard:

  • Gameweek 32: Pickford (BUR)

  • Gameweek 33: Areola (FUL)

  • Double Gameweek 34: Pickford (NFO, EVE)

GAMEWEEK 32 TEAM

Here is my team for this week. Unless there is any dramatic injury news there will be no changes except for the ‘keeper (Dubravka > Pickford), which I’m still mulling over.

The defence, which at first sight didn’t seem great, is actually fine for Gameweek 32. Gabriel (£5.3m) and Ben White (£5.8m) have a decent-ish fixture, and I can live with playing Virgil van Dijk (£6.6m) or Illia Zabarnyi (£4.5m).

Now all I have to think about is captain choice for this week.

Erling Haaland (£14.3m) led the captain poll but Cole Palmer (£5.9m) has caught him up after Thursday’s hat-trick. However, it isn’t decisive in percentage terms, with Mohamed Salah (£13.4m) and Son Heung-min (£10.1m) also in the mix.

It honestly feels like there is hardly anything in it. I’m currently on Salah (c)/Palmer (vc), simply because they have the easier fixtures, albeit away from home.

I also have some concerns over Son v Nottingham Forest’s mid/low block. They’ve actually looked pretty good under Nuno Espirito Santo recently, with only five conceded in their last five games.

It’s a decision I’ll leave till much closer to deadline, but in the meantime, I’ll leave you with some key stats for your perusal.
