Who is the better pick Son or Salah? Or should you have both?

Premium players are always likely to be one of the biggest dilemma’s that FPL managers face. There are only so many premium assets who managers can fit easily within the budget restrictions.

Son Heung-min and Mo Salah are currently two of the biggest conversations across the FPL community. Should managers have both of them? If they can’t afford both then how to they decide on which one to go for. Son and Salah face each other in Gameweek 7, but after that both have a nice run of fixtures.

The two midfielders are currently just one point apart. Son is tied second with Bukayo Saka on 44 points, Salah is just one point behind the Spurs’ captain with 43.

Son Heung-min

Son had a difficult start to the season in FPL. Whilst Spurs were playing well his position out wide in Postecoglou’s side meant that he wasn’t a good buy in FPL. However, the move into the number 9 spot for the game against Burnley in Gameweek 4 has completely changed Son’s prospects in FPL. The midfielder has since scored five goals in three matches.

After the game against Liverpool in Gameweek 7 Spurs face Luton, Fulham, Crystal Palace, Chelsea and Wolves in their next five. All of these should give Son plenty of potential for attacking returns. Especially if he continues to play out of position.

There is a slight risk of course that Richarlison gets some starts across these fixtures and that Son is therefore moved back out wide. If this happens he will be less effective in FPL.

Son’s expected goals (xG) and expected goal involvement (xGI) are significantly improved from the number 9 position. Indeed from out wide in Gameweeks 1-3 Son returned just 8 FPL points, whereas from his central position in Gameweeks 4-6 he has 36 points.

On the left Son from out wide Gameweeks 1-3, on the right Son from the number 9 position Gameweeks 4-6.

At £9.2m, Son is still classed as a premium asset in the game, however he is at the more affordable end of the premium spectrum. Having Son in FPL squads alongside the likes of Haaland is way easier to budget for than finding the money for Salah. Indeed the double up with Maddison and Son will only set managers back £17.1m which is great for the key attackers from a very forward thinking Spurs team.

Mo Salah

Mo Salah is the key asset at Liverpool. Whilst managers have cheaper options who they can invest in such as Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez none of these offer the route to points or security of starts that Salah does.

Salah holds the record for being the highest scoring FPL asset ever and the only player to have scored over 300 points in one season. This season he has been highly consistent, however slower with his points. It took him until Gameweek 5 to registered a double-digit return, however he has now managed two on the bounce.

This season Salah has also increased his creative output. His expected assists is greater per-90 than it was during the 2022/23 campaign. Indeed his expected goals tally is all up on his per 90 numbers from last season.

The numbers on the left are from the 2023/24 season. Those on the right are from the 2022/23 campaign.

Case for both?

Both Salah and Son look like good buys for FPL managers. But is there a case for owning both of them?

The answer is Yes. However, there are compromises that would have to be made across the rest of managers squads. Owning Son and Salah would likely mean that managers would struggle to own Bukayo Saka, Marcus Rashford, Kiran Trippier etc.

However, with a number of budget defenders such as Destiny Udogie, Matt Cash, Dan Burn and Sven Botman managers might be able to manipulate the budget even to squeeze in both Salah and Son alongside Haaland.
