Newsletter exclusive: Hwang v Neto

Wolverhampton Wanderers host Sheffield United and Fulham in the next three Gameweeks, so naturally, Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers are gravitating towards their assets.

One debate raging in the comments section and elsewhere is over which midfielder to buy.

Hwang Hee-chan (£5.5m) and Pedro Neto (£5.7m) are the two names in question.

In this EXCLUSIVE, we’ll compare the duo side by side.

Hwang is already into double figures for Premier League goals this season, with 10 from 18 starts and three sub appearances.

10-2 up on goals scored, he also betters Neto’s numbers for minutes per expected goal (xG).

Both players have very similar rates of shots, shots in the box and shots on target, with Neto the more prominent of the two in terms of touches in the opposition area.

However, Neto has still only had two ‘big chances’ all season, compared to Hwang’s 12.

A look at Hwang’s shot map confirms why he is superior in that regard, with his chances coming significantly closer – and more centrally – to the opponents’ goal.

Neto is by far the more creative player.

The Portuguese recorded his 11th assist of the Premier League campaign on Saturday – only Ollie Watkins (£8.7m) has more.

Neto’s 37 minutes per chance created also stacks up well. Of those who have played at least 1,000 minutes, only 13 players outperform him in that regard.

Contrast that with Hwang, who has supplied a chance every 103 minutes, and it’s clear Neto is the superior creator.

Hwang v Neto Penalties and Set Plays

Neto has shared corner-taking duty with Pablo Sarabia (£4.7m) since properly returning to first-team action in Gameweek 21.

The Portuguese has taken six of Wolves’ 18 corners.

The same applies to free-kicks (see below).

Forthcoming opponents Sheffield United and Fulham both rank among the worst five sides for efforts from set plays conceded over the last six Gameweeks, so it’s worth factoring in.

Meanwhile, one area we’re not yet entirely sure about is Wolves’ penalties.

Matheus Cunha (£5.7m), who has sustained a “fairly significant” hamstring injury, Sarabia and Hwang have all successfully stepped up and scored this season.

So, if Sarabia is on the pitch (he is regularly subbed off around the 70-minute mark even when starting), he could take it given his record, but equally, Hwang is also in the mix.

Final Thoughts

Hwang and Neto are both excellent options for Wolves’ forthcoming run.

To summarise, Hwang has the better goal threat while Neto is more about creativity.

That arguably gives Hwang the edge, particularly if he has penalties in his locker, but there’s precious little in it, with a very similar points-per-start average (5.3/5.0).

Neto is unquestionably the more exciting of the pair to watch in full flow, but is his pace and direct style better suited to playing more adventurous opposition, where there is more space to exploit on the counter-attack?

The fact eight of his 13 attacking returns this season have come against top-half opposition perhaps strengthens that claim.

As for Sarabia, he is usually the first to be subbed off in the Wolves front three and isn’t as nailed, so Hwang and Neto are almost certainly the two stand-out candidates to target.
