GAMEWEEK 36 REVIEW

A red arrow with 96 points doesn’t happen too often! The overall rank fell from 50k to 53k in Gameweek 36. I’m making hard work of this top 50k goal.

I used the free transfer to bring in Arsenal’s Ben White (£6.1m) in place of Malo Gusto (£4.3m). The Chelsea defender did make a return to action, playing seven minutes from the bench against West Ham, but I felt I couldn’t rely on him for the upcoming Double Gameweek in terms of minutes. I also wanted to open the door for a possible move for Nicolas Jackson (£7.0m) this week.

It was good to finally own two Arsenal defenders again. Selling David Raya (£5.2m) on the Gameweek 30 Wildcard was a mistake. He’s registered six clean sheets since! Maybe he should be the solution to my Caoimhin Kelleher (£3.7m) problem for the Bench Boost this week.

Having brought in White, I decided to bench Dominic Solanke (£7.1m) rather than have him face my two Arsenal defenders. It didn’t make a difference in the end, with replacement Alejandro Garnacho (£5.0m) blanking in the defeat to Crystal Palace. Even with two fixtures in Gameweek 37, there’s temptation to lose Garnacho for a hit.

The Bench Boost is active. Now, I just need some fit players. It will be -8 this week, maybe even more. Kelleher, Fabian Schar (£5.6m) and Jan Paul van Hecke (£4.1m) need to go unless there’s good news on either of the defenders in Friday’s press conferences. That seems unlikely.

A third Manchester City pick is the number one priority. Kevin De Bruyne (£10.5m) would be nice but I think it makes more sense to get Ederson (£5.5m) or Josko Gvardiol (£5.1m) with the midfield in good shape. I’m leaning towards Gvardiol due to his attacking returns from left-back recently. The second defender transfer is likely to be Newcastle’s Dan Burn (£4.7m). Kieran Trippier (£6.6m) is back in training and very tempting but I’m not convinced he’ll start both Gameweek 37 fixtures. I like the security of minutes that Burn offers.

If Gvardiol and Burn come in, that just leaves the goalkeeper position to fix. I don’t like any of the options outside of Ederson so it will be a punt on whoever comes in. I mentioned Raya above but that would block a Gameweek 38 move for Bukayo Saka (£9.0m) or Kai Havertz (£7.5m) and I’m keen to keep those options open. It also feels wrong to pick a single Gameweek keeper on a Bench Boost! It’s likely to come down to Guglielmo Vicario (£5.3m) vs Andre Onana (£5.0m). With Tottenham Hotspur facing Burnley (home) and Sheffield United (away) in their final three fixtures, that just about swings it in his favour. Jordan Pickford (£4.8m) is under consideration too but I’ll most likely end up on a doubler.

Bringing in Vicario, Gvardiol and Burn would leave £2.0m in the bank for a Gameweek 38 transfer. I’m very tempted to go all out and bring in Jackson for another hit in place of Solanke but that’s a decision that will go down to the wire.

Something I need to spend some more time on before the deadline is looking at which player I’m most likely to want to bring in for the final day. If it’s Saka, then I may need to go cheaper with my goalkeeper pick, in order to avoid needing a -4 next week. However, if Saka is out of reach next week, Havertz is a perfectly viable alternative.

The devil on my shoulder is also suggesting Tottenham’s Richarlison (£6.8m) for the Double Gameweek and a good fixture on the final day. It would be in place of Garnacho, who I don’t have much faith in at the moment given how poor Manchester United have been. The upside Richarlison offers is hard to ignore. That’s another one for me to mull over until Saturday morning. If the Brazilian did come in, it would have to be Onana over Vicario and it would probably rule out owning an Arsenal midfielder against Everton.

A possible minus 16 in Gameweek 37, what could possibly go wrong?!?

Best of luck for Double Gameweek 37 everyone.
